making money online

                 Home Based Business (Part One)

A home based business is basically any type of business that can be operated out of the home.

There are two types of home based businesses. There is an internet business that is solely operated from an office located in the home, and there is a service type business that is managed from the home but the work is done on a job site or away from the home. Both of these business are considered home based, but differ in many aspects of the business.

I have operated both types of businesses, and I strongly feel that an internet business is the way to go. This is mainly due to the time and freedom that an internet business offers. The best thing about an internet business is the fact that it does not even have to be operated from the home, which means you can travel and take your business with you providing it is on auto pilot, and can be operated without your assistance on a daily bases. By having a lap top computer, your business can be operated from anywhere as long as you can check orders, answers questions, and keep your customers happy. When you have your business on auto-pilot, most of this work is done for you automatically.

How to Choose a Home Based Business;

Choosing A Home based business can be very easy or a very difficult task. This will ultimately depend on your knowledge, skills, expertise, what you like doing, or what you are willing to do to make your home based business a success.

It is often said “do what you love and the money will follow”. This plan will always provide you with a happy business, but it does not always provide you with a wealthy business.

When choosing a business, there is a lot to consider. You should take you time and find a business that you will enjoy operating, but make sure before any amount of time or money is spent, that the business you choose can generate profits, which is the main reason for starting any type of home business. If the business can not generate profits, you will be wasting your time and money attempting to make it work.

There are two objectives that must be met before having a successful business. One; there must be a need for your business, service, or products. Two; you must be able to market and advertise your business properly if it has a chance to succeed. Without proper marketing, your business will surely fail.

Is a Home Based Business Right for You;

Operating a home based business is a lot more than just getting a business license. You have to be dedicated to your business to make it a success. Every new and established business takes a lot of work, especially in the beginning. An internet business is no different.

You should never start a business if you are not willing to put in the work to make it a success. Every successful business takes time and many applied efforts to make it a success; therefore, if you do not have time to dedicate to the business, you should not embark on the business venture.

Even fail proof business models require dedication. No business can succeed without you being dedicated and applying the necessary efforts to make the business succeed.

Before you start a business make sure you understand what is involved and know that it takes many hours of hard work before any profits can be made with any type of business.

The Advantages of a home based business;

There are many advantages to operating a home based business. Some of the advantages would include; No boss telling you what to do or when to do it, no time schedule, working when you want to work, no commute to work, no need for work clothes, no fighting traffic or dealing with travel expenses, tax advantages for business expenses, and the possibility of a greater income.

All of the above advantages are great reasons to start a home based business. Operating a home based business can offer you a lot of time and freedom while giving you the possibility of making a much larger income then working a regular job.

The Disadvantages of A Home Based Business;

There are also disadvantages to operating a home based business. Some of the disadvantages would include; a need for a home office, a need for a computer with an internet connection, having to be self motivated, having to work alone without people contact, and the fact that your income will be based on your work efforts and how productive you can ultimately be while operating your home based business.

If you are not able to work alone in your home while being self motivated, your home based business will most likely never succeed. You must be able to work from your home to produce income or your home based business will surely fail.

Business Plan;

Every home based business needs a business plan. A business plan should be created prior to starting the business you plan to operate. You should not spend any amount of money on a business until your business plan is established, written, and implemented correctly. Only when your business plan is refined should you spend money on your new business venture.

So many new business owners make this mistake. They come up with an idea, put it in action, and wonder why it can not be successful. Without a business plan your business will be scattered while in operation. Without planning your business’ finances, you’ll run out of funds. Without planning your marketing strategies, you’ll have no customers. That’s why it is so important to establish a well written business plan for your business before the business is in operation.

Business planning is very helpful and important as it relates to succeeding with your business. There are many obstacles you will be faced with when operating a business; therefore, by having a well thought out business plan makes these obstacles a breeze to master.

By planning the entire process of your business, it will have a great chance of succeeding. Writing a business plan is a little work, but will benefit your business a great deal. If you want a successful business, you must first start with a well written business plan.

Proper Mental Attitude;

When operating a home based business your mental attitude will be very important. Starting a business can be very difficult, but if you can not maintain a proper mindset, your business will never succeed.

When making money no matter how the money is being made ninety percent of the success will be based on the thinking process, leaving only ten percent for the skill or technique.

To help you understand this belief you must open your mind to the possibilities. Before you can start a business you must have an idea. Before you can market your business you must have a plan. Before money can be made, you must have a strategy. All of these statements deal with the designing and implication of the business, which can not be accomplished without the thinking process.

In the business world you must set your mind free where it can become creative. Once your mind possesses creativity, you’ll be able to come up with several new ideas on how to start or build your new business.

There are a few factors that must be considered as it relates to a proper mind set. One; you must remain focus on your objectives and goals at all times while trying to succeed at anything that you attempt to complete. Two; you must take action; nothing can be completed without starting the process. Three; you must persevere though the difficulties no matter what failures or obstacles stand in the way. You can not ever give up or stop trying if you expect to succeed. Four; continue or repeat the process until your goals are reached.

You must also learn how to deal with financial stress. Most of your financial stress will be caused from the lack of sales. Most new business owners are able to start the new business, but are unable to continue it without sales to keep it from going under. The problem is not the sales it’s the poor financial planning of the business. You must realize that a business takes time to grow to producing profits. If you do not have a great deal of business funds, you must start small and grow the business gradually instead of going in debt or closing the business. When you run out of advertising funds and sales are not coming in; this can be very stressful, but you must understand its just part of starting a new business. You must learn how to deal with financial stress, or your business will never succeed.

No matter what problems arise while operating your business, you’ll be able to handle them with a proper mental attitude. The ones that succeed know this statement to be very true, and is why they are successful.

Developing a proper mind set for business takes time to accomplish, but once it’s achieved nothing can keep you from succeeding.

How to Transfer from Employee to Business Owner;

This task will be difficult for anyone to accomplish unless you realize it is a problem. Many new business owners do not even explore the possibilities of this problem. Most new business owners try to operate their business based on what they are taught by working as an employee in the corporate world. Some new business owners think just by being a boss or in charge of the business can make them capable of succeeding. This where a lot of new business owners fail.

You must understand that there is a lot of difference in the mindset of the employee and the business owner. For an example; the employee thinks about working forty hours a week for a paycheck. The business owner or entrepreneur knows that if he does not work or find a way to make the business profitable it will fail. The employee thinks about how many holidays they get in the year while the entrepreneur thinks about new ways of creating wealth throughout the year. The biggest difference in the two types is the fact that the employee thinks about how soon the paycheck will come while the entrepreneur thinks about the long term effects of his implemented strategies.

If you are a business owner, you must change your thinking and start acting like an entrepreneur. Forget about the pride of being in charge, and start thinking about making your business a success. You can not operate a successful business with the mindset of an employee. You must learn how to become an entrepreneur, think long term, and most importantly, treat your business as a business, not another job.

Time Management;

Time management is extremely important when you are operating a home based business. You must be able to eliminate distractions like; telephones calls, television, cleaning, and any other distractions that might cause you not to work on the business while at home.

With a home based business it is very easy to get distracted; however, if you treat your home business as working at home to make money, and not time freedom to goof off, you can overcome any distractions that come your way while working at home.

If your business has a chance of succeeding it will require time set aside for the sole purpose of operating the business. Without this time set aside your business will never succeed. You must eliminate all distractions if you are going to succeed with a home based business.

Keeping Good Business Records;

Being a home business owner, whether a home business or not, you must keep good business records. This process begins the first day of operation, and sometimes way before the business license is ever obtained.

You should keep monthly business records filed in individuals folders. All business receipts and expenses should be filed each time an expense is generated. I also recommend that your business taxes are prepared monthly. This will eliminate a lot of work at the end of the year when preparing your taxes.

Paper work can be time consuming; however, it is necessary when operating a business. Being a business owner, you are able to write off expenses, but you must be able to prove the tax write off and expenses with documentation. The only way you can prove your business expenses is by keeping good business records.

Look at it this way; you can either pay “Uncle Sam” at the end of the year or put the money back into your business. Learn to keep good records and you’ll be able to continue you home based business while making it a success.
