Starting an internet business can be very challenging. After deciding what type of business to operate, designing and setting up your website, the real challenge begins.

Once your website is set up and ready to take orders you discover that no sales are being made at your website. The main problem that you are faced with is no web traffic, which ultimately equals no sales. To overcome this problem, you must be able to generate a large amount of web traffic to your website. The reason for the large amount of traffic is based on the number game. The rule that is most often used is for every one hundred visitors you should be able to make at least on sale. This percentage only applies if you have a great converting website.

There are two things you must possess in order to obtain large amounts of web traffic to your website. One; you must have access to money in order to buy web traffic. Two; if you do not have money to spend on web traffic, you must be willing to learn the free traffic methods and have the time to implement these strategies. Basically, you will be paying for web traffic with your money or you will be providing or trading your time for this same web traffic. Either way it is going to cost you time or money.

A few examples of paid traffic would include; pay per click advertising, ezine advertising with solo ads, banner advertising, magazine advertising, delivering postcards, and direct mail marketing, which can contain any form of information to advertise your website.

A few examples of free advertising would include; writing articles, making videos, blogging, forum marketing, viral marketing, and social media marketing.  

Paying for web traffic is simple, put the money out there and the visitors will come; however, if sales are not made from each visitor that you pay to arrive at your site there is no way of reaching them again unless you pay them to visit again. To overcome this problem you can have a lead generation page that captures their information providing you can persuade them to opt into your opt-in list by providing their email address.

The free traffic methods will take a lot of time to implement; however, they will pay for themselves over time. For an example; let’s say you write an article and post this article on an article directory site. Over time this article will be read by many different readers. This will allow you to get you message out to the public and hopefully draw in new visits to your website by providing your link attached to the article. This form of advertising cost you nothing, but can bring your website a lot of visitors. 

So here’s my recommendation; I feel strongly that you should use and implement both traffic methods in order to have a successful online business. You should set up a pay per click advertising campaign with a low daily budget until you can raise more money for this campaign. You should also try to send out a few solo ezine ads during the month. While you have these campaigns in operation you should begin writing articles. These articles should first be utilized on your website to draw in free traffic from the search engines. The key is to have unique articles on your website that no one else is using. After you develop at least ten different articles for your website, begin writing articles for article directories that can be read to bring in additional visitors. You should also try to add at least one new unique article on your website each week. The more unique content you have on your site, the more free web traffic you will receive from the search engines.
