How much it cost to operate an Internet business?

With any business, there are expenses involved to operate the business. An internet business is no different. The great thing about an internet business is the fact that the business can be operated twenty-four hours a day, and you do not even have to be there when a sell is made. The other great thing about operating an internet business is the capabilities of reaching a global market of customers. This basically means the revenue that can be captured is unlimited, and that is why most people chose to operate an internet business.

The cost of operating an internet business will ultimately depend on the type of internet business you chose to operate. There are many ways money can be made online, and the methods can be very different. First of all; most newbie’s on the web chose to sell online products, buying from wholesalers, and then selling the products at a higher price to customers. The cost of this type of venture can get really expensive, mainly due to the inventory that will be needed to operate the business. A lot of you have heard about drop shipping. I recommend that you stay away from drop shippers. If you can not afford to keep inventory, this is not the business venture you need to take. The biggest problems with drop shippers is the fact that you do all of the work to make the sell, and they capture the customer with their logos and advertising. Try to avoid drop shipping when you can.

 Expenses to think about when starting an internet business; First, You will need a website and software to create the website. You will also want the software to be easy to use where you are not spending all of your time creating the website. You should be able to find easy to use programs for about, or under two hundred dollars. After your website is completed you’ll need hosting for your website. Hosting fees will vary from seven dollars a month to forty dollars a month. This will depend on the hosting that you chose and your website needs. You get what you pay for; however, by signing those two year contracts, your monthly hosting fees can be as low as seven dollars a month. This is the way I host my sites due to the fact I am able to get quality hosting and pay low monthly fees at the same time. When you sign up for this type of hosting, you pay the fees up front; therefore, you usually pay about two hundred dollars. Next, you will need a merchant account to process your orders. This fee will usually cost about twenty-five dollars a month, plus a small individual order fee. These fees can really add up and cut into your profits. I would recommend that you use Pay Pal when you first get started where you can make sure your website will make money before spending extra amounts of money each month in the beginning. Other fees will include business and tax licenses. This fee should be under fifty dollars unless your business is incorporated. The last big fee will be your web traffic and advertising needs. Don’t be cheap with your advertising needs; this area alone will make your website a success or a failure. Also keep in mind all of the above fees are consider a business expense, better know as a tax write off.  

You will need at least five hundred dollars to start your internet business; this does not include inventory if you have a product base business. Your inventory can be as little as a thousand dollars or as much as twenty thousand dollars just for your start up inventory. Your inventory is a must. Customers do not like waiting for their products and will often request a refund if it takes too long to receive their order. This is another reason why drop shipping does not work.

Although this article has been about the business expense side of an internet business, don’t get discourage, there is a lot of money to be made with your internet business. You just have to figure out how to make the internet business profitable.
